The Los Angeles Dodgers are up 2-0 in the World Series against the New York Yankees.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s outstanding effort in Game 2 propelled Los Angeles to the lead, and the Yankees are on life
support as the series moves to the Bronx on Monday night. Life couldn’t get much better for Dodgers fans, can it?
While many Dodgers fans are focused on the Fall Classic (as they should be), speculations began to circulate on
Sunday after MLB insider Jon Heyman revealed that Los Angeles intends to enter the Juan Soto sweepstakes this offseason.
According to Heyman, Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million contract will allow Andrew Friedman and the Dodgers’ front office to
chase another big-name free agent acquisition this offseason. LA Dodgers Rumors: Juan Soto may be on Los
Angeles’ radar this offseason. According to Heyman’s sources, “if he’s interested” in a west coast move, the Dodgers intend
to participate in the upcoming bidding war for Soto’s services. Soto, like Ohtani last winter, will be the most sought-after free agent this offseason, but few teams will be able to match Soto’s asking price.
While it is unlikely to eclipse Ohtani’s $700 million deal from a year ago, many experts predict Soto’s upcoming deal to be worth more than $50 million per year. That figure will be far too much for all but perhaps a half-dozen Major League Baseball teams, including the Dodgers. Now, just because LA has entered the race does not guarantee that they will be the favorite in the Soto Derby. The Yankees, New York Mets, and Toronto Blue Jays are all expected to seriously pursue a deal for Soto this offseason. Don’t be surprised if another team makes a push at the four-time All-Star. Some have even hinted that the Washington Nationals may pursue a reunion.
If Soto were to join the Dodgers, the rest of MLB would be in an uproar. “The rich getting richer,” they’d say, and they’d be correct. One could argue that LA has bigger needs than adding Soto’s bat to an already potent lineup, but the Dodgers would be foolish to not even entertain the idea. While still a long shot, don’t sleep on the idea of the Dodgers signing Soto this offseason.
