The Bills signed Mike Edwards to a one-year, $2.8MM contract this offseason, although he has only appeared in three of the team’s eight games this season.
Edwards has only played 20 total snaps, seven on defense and 13 on special teams, as Bills defensive coordinator Bobby Babich prefers Taylor Rapp and
Damar Hamlin to start at safety, with Cam Lewis and Cole Bishop providing rotational depth. As a result, Edwards is available for trade, according to ESPN’s
Dan Fowler, with the veteran safety looking for a new home and more consistent playing time this season. Four
of Edward’s five absences this year have been healthy scratches, and an illness has kept him out of the Bills’ Week 7 game.
Edwards has just under $1MM in outstanding salary and per-game roster bonuses and would most likely cost a late Day 3 choice on the trade market,
making him a cheap acquisition for a team looking for secondary help. According to Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic, the Bills’ safeties could improve
their play. Rapp and Hamlin have sufficed as a starting duo, although Bishop and Lewis have received Pro Football Focus ratings of 50.3 and 45.5,
respectively. If Buffalo decides to trade Edwards, they may re-sign Micah Hyde, who entered free agency last spring and announced that he would either retire or return to his former team. The Bills have kept the door open for a reunion.
