As the 2024 season concludes, the Pittsburgh Steelers face several critical decisions, none more significant than
addressing their quarterback situation. With Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, and Kyle Allen all set to enter free agency,
the Steelers could completely revamp their quarterback roster if they choose to do so.
This wouldn’t be the first time the Steelers overhauled their quarterback lineup. Previously, they traded Kenny
Pickett, released Mitch Trubisky, and allowed Mason Rudolph to leave in free agency. According to Dianna Russini of
The Athletic, there’s an expectation that Wilson will return to Pittsburgh. However, that hasn’t stopped
speculation, as draft analysts have linked the Steelers to selecting a quarterback in the first round. ESPN’s Matt Miller,
for example, projected Alabama’s Jalen Milroe as a potential future leader for the Steelers.
“The Steelers’ quarterback future is uncertain as Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are set to hit free agency.
While one or both could re-sign, the team may look for a long-term solution,” Miller noted. He praised Milroe’s blend of Wilson’s arm strength and pocket mobility with Fields’ rushing prowess. Although still a developing talent, Milroe has shown potential this season with 15 passing touchdowns and 17 rushing scores. Miller added that Milroe’s passing touch needs refinement but highlighted scouts’ belief in his high ceiling among draft-eligible quarterbacks. If the Steelers were to retain Wilson, Milroe could have the opportunity to learn and develop before taking the reins.
Pittsburgh has also shown interest in the 2025 quarterback class, with scouts attending games like Alabama-LSU and evaluating Milroe multiple times this season. This effort suggests the team may be weighing its options for future quarterback prospects.
However, Milroe’s stock has seen some turbulence. After a strong start to the season, his performance has dipped, culminating in a lackluster showing during Alabama’s loss to Oklahoma. This decline raises doubts about his standing as a first-round pick, making his selection by the Steelers less certain. While drafting a quarterback remains a possibility, Milroe’s recent struggles suggest he may no longer be their top choice.
