Pribula, who has been a pivotal figure in Penn State’s offense, cited the overlapping timelines of the College
Football Playoff and the transfer portal as a driving factor behind his decision. In a heartfelt statement, he expressed, “The
current NCAA post-season model creates a challenge for student-athletes… After speaking at length with my family and
coaches, it is with a heavy heart that I announce my intentions to enter the transfer portal and depart from the team to explore opportunities elsewhere.”
Throughout the season, Pribula’s contributions have been noteworthy. His most significant performance came
against Wisconsin, where he stepped in for an injured Drew Allar and led the team to a 28-13 victory. During that
game, Pribula completed 11 of 13 passes, including a touchdown to tight end Khalil Dinkins, showcasing his readiness and skill under pressure.
Head Coach James Franklin addressed the situation, acknowledging the challenges posed by the current NCAA structure.
He remarked, “The timing of the transfer portal is a no-win situation,” highlighting the difficulties in balancing postseason preparations with player decisions.
Pribula’s departure leaves a void in the Nittany Lions’ quarterback depth chart. With starting quarterback Drew Allar confirming his return for the 2025 season, the team will need to identify a reliable backup to ensure stability and depth in the quarterback position moving forward.
This development also underscores broader concerns within college football regarding the alignment of transfer portal windows and postseason schedules. The concurrent timelines place student-athletes in challenging positions, forcing them to make pivotal career decisions amidst critical team commitments. As the sport continues to evolve, there is a growing call for administrative adjustments to better accommodate the needs and futures of its players.
As Penn State prepares for its upcoming playoff game, the focus will undoubtedly be on maintaining team cohesion and performance despite the recent changes. The Nittany Lions will look to rally together, drawing on their season’s experiences and the leadership of Coach Franklin to navigate this period of transition and strive for success in the College Football Playoffs.
