Portsmouth and Southsea are in the midst of significant, real-time changes that are already underway and set to reshape the coastal landscape, leisure spaces, and local community life. From enhanced sea-defences to cultural and recreational revivals, multiple major projects have just been confirmed or are actively progressing, with positive implications for residents, the city’s resilience, and tourism.
Southsea Beach to Double in Size from Autumn 2025
Among the most eye-catching transformations is the plan to double the size of Southsea Beach along the stretch between the Pyramid Centre and the Coffee Cup Café. Starting in October 2025, works will begin to install a one-metre diameter pipeline from Canoe Lake, to allow new shingle to be discharged across the beach.
The increased shingle beach is designed not just for aesthetics and recreation but as a hardened defence against coastal erosion and flooding. It will help absorb wave energy, giving better protection for coastal properties, businesses and infrastructure.
As work proceeds, access will be restricted in some beach sections, particularly to the west of South Parade Pier, but promenade and seafront businesses will remain open. Parts of the beach will reopen section by section starting at Coffee Cup, moving west as sections are completed.
The full phase of shingle import and pipeline works is expected to finish by March 2026, after which further construction of new sea defences in that same area will begin.
This component is part of the Southsea Coastal Scheme, a long-term committed coastal defence programme. It has been recognised for its scale, innovation, and importance.
Hilsea Lido Comes Back Alive as Community and Wellness Hub
Another transformative project already in motion is the restoration and reopening of Hilsea Lido. Closed since 2022 for significant structural and facility refurbishments, this outdoor pool and leisure complex is being upgraded with major investment.
The renovation effort is supported by government funding under the Levelling Up programme.
The refurbishment includes installing a new, modern filtration system, updating changing rooms and amenities, improving accessibility (ramps, accessible toilets), and restoring lagoons and related parts of the pool complex.
Once complete, the Hilsea Lido will be managed by the team behind Sea Lanes (Brighton) in partnership with South Downs Leisure, and it is envisioned not only as a swimming facility but as a wellness and community centre with pop-up food and drink, relaxation zones, family-friendly events and more.
The reopening is expected in early autumn 2025, coinciding with the 90th anniversary of the Lido.
Early Beach Works and Stronger Seafront Strategy
To ensure smooth execution of the projects, authorities are already launching early works between November 2025 and March 2026 linked to the Southsea sea defence plan. These early activities will help with material and cost management, and allow monitoring of how the new beach behaves under seasonal conditions.
Portsmouth City Council has also been refining its Southsea Seafront Strategy, aiming to enhance and regenerate the seafront in ways that attract visitors, support local businesses, and improve public spaces. The improvements already implemented, such as a beach volleyball court and extended events, are part of this broader vision.
