The Independent has reported that Everton is still keen on signing Kalvin Phillips, a midfielder for Manchester City.

Phillips, 28, has found himself surplus to requirements at the Etihad Stadium, making him an attractive target for several clubs.

Ipswich Town and Fulham have also joined the race to sign the midfielder, setting up an intriguing transfer battle.

Everton’s interest in Phillips dates back to the summer, with manager Sean Dyche reportedly keen on bolstering his midfield options. The Toffees have been monitoring Phillips’ situation closely, and with Onana’s departure, the need for another midfielder has become more pressing.

During the January transfer window, the 31-time England cap midfielder went on loan to West Ham, a decision that ended badly for him.

Philipps is not included in Pep Guardiola’s plans going forward, as he made abundantly evident when he left out of the team on Friday due to Rodri’s absence.

The former Leeds United midfielder has played just 418 minutes in the Premier League under the Spaniard, and a departure from the team is imminent.

He was left off of England’s Euro 2024 roster, and in order to rejoin the national team, he must play frequently elsewhere.

Since Phillips is paid highly, he would have to accept a salary reduction to play for any other Premier League team.

Moreover, Everton will need to pay a transfer price to entice him away from City, where he is under contract until 2028. At this point, it’s unclear if City will consent to loan him out once more because they most likely intend to cut him loose forever.
